About Our Teachers
Jane Averill – Oils – Adults and children
I love painting and enjoy sharing my passion and knowledge with others who want to create. My first love is oil paints, although I work and teach in a variety of medias. Composition and tone value are the key to any painting, in my opinion, and I stress both in my classes. But mostly, I want my students to trust their own eyes – really paint what they see, not what they think they are supposed to see. Hearing “Oh, now I see it!” from a student is my greatest joy as a teacher.
Judy Glazier – Watercolors – Adults
Watercolors are a fun way to create beautiful paintings. Whether you are doing quick sketches or more elaborate paintings, you can achieve amazing effects by the way you mix and layer your water and paints. Subtle colors and brilliant jewel tones are yours to apply. Soft edges, sharp details, spattering, blotting, light, and shadow all add to the painting's atmosphere. Both realistic and abstract works are easy to create. Instruction is provided on watercolor fundamentals, including use of paints, papers, and brushes. All students, even beginners, are encouraged to explore exciting watercolor techniques right from the beginning.
Lou Ann Peters – Acrylics – Adults
Acrylics are attractive to many artists because of their quick drying time and the range of detail they allow. Students can work with acrylics on a variety of surfaces including canvas, paper, wood, tiles, furniture, and walls. By using translucent layers of paint, colors can range from subtle to bold. My style is highly realistic and I believe that tonal value is the most important element in a successful painting. Using a step-by-step method of teaching, I help students learn to create works filled with light and detail.
Ellen Raffelson – Mixed Media - Children
I let the creative process lead me. Bright and rich acrylic colors I utilized on canvas to give my subjects life and clarity. I am influenced by the modern masters, Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Warhol and Haring to name a few. But Hessam Abrishimi is my absolute favorite and I have been lucky to meet and speak to him about his ideas and techniques at his recent Gallery opening in Greensboro, NC.
The most gratifying part of art comes to me when I teach art to my students at Serendipity Art School in Greensboro, NC. and when I can WOW students of all ages with my award winning Space Painting Demonstrations, soon to be seen on YouTUBE.
